...according to one contemporary, had "the face of a pantler, the general look of a cobbler, the girth of a barrelmaker, the manners of a hatter." Estimates of his work were hardly more flattering: Sainte-Beuve dismissed his style as "prolix and formless, slack." The author of La Comédie Humaine, that panorama of post-revolutionary France, died up to his chins in debt to his mother, wife, sister, mistress, gardener and the village constable in Ville-d'Avray. Now the world stands heavily in Balzac's debt, and in the 115 years since his death, dozens...

Psychologist Timothy Leary, 45, is less successful when it comes to com- municating with cops. The high priest of hallucination, who is most often held accountable for popularizing the mind-bending drug LSD, was arrested in Texas in December and last month received the maximum sentence-30 years in jail and a $40,000 fine-for illegally transporting marijuana. Last week police raided the rambling, 64-room house rented by Leary's Castalia Foundation in Millbrook, N.Y., and Leary, free on bail, once again was arrested-this time on charges of "possessing" narcotics, which were found in an upstairs...

Mobutu had obvious cause for com plaint. Many Assemblymen had spent their vacations whipping up local sentiment against his measures to cut down government spending and end their cherished kickbacks and bribes. If they then get cramping ab dominal pains, nausea and diarrhea, even worse than their original com plaints, their doctors usually put them on a still blander diet - meaning more milk. If such patients shirk their milk drinking and their symptoms diminish, the usual explanation is a quick, glib suggestion that they must be allergic to milk. Not so, report two University of Colorado doctors in the Journal of the A.M.A. The trouble is far more likely to be a shortage of the enzyme that...

Fairchild Camera is a misnamed com pany whose eleven divisions concentrate on electronics and also turn out a range of products from heavy multiconductor cables to printing equipment. All the excitement is over one division, the Semiconductor branch. It put Fairchild on the ground floor in miniature silicon transistors, which are more effective than the original germanium variety; last year Fairchild had 30% of the booming U.S. market for silicon transistors. Fairchild's prize division also accounts for one-third of the market for integrated circuits, which are fleck-sized components that do the work of many transistors...
