Turbulent, exciting has been the history of speculation in mining. Few men now alive can recall the discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859, but many remember the phases of speculation which received their impetus then and burned long like fever throughout the country. In San Francisco this speculation was especially great. Around 1875 the San Francisco Mining Exchange was at its height.
