...Nothing, in fact, is revealed: we never do find out what exactly happened to Charlie and Myra, and it doesn't matter. What does matter is the effect their unseen presence (or absence) has on a group of affluent, complacent New York professionals. Having made it big doesn't conceal the fact that they're ill-equipped and totally unprepared for dealing with a crisis of this kind. Throw in a case of whiplash, back spasms, temporary deafness and all manner of quirks and mishaps, and you've got manifold ways of making them look even more foolish...

...real entertainment began when baritone Earle Patriarco's Sergeant Belcore took the stage. A classic miles gloriosus, this Belcore had a vapidity no strutting could conceal. Equally but independently ridiculous was bass Dale Travis' Doctor Dulcamara, a hobo-quack who bore an eerie resemblance to the poet Donald Hall. Dulcamara's vendor antics completely undercut his dramatic entrance and resonant "udite" ("listen!"), and his abracadabra, Darkwing Duck gesturings made one laugh out loud. If it hadn't been for the skillful comic acting of these two, the farcical plot would have been in awkward tension with the gorgeous music. Though...

That response may seem extraordinary for a man whose two daughters were slaughtered, and it is far from certain that his attitude is shared by all Tutsi. Many made no effort to conceal their contempt for the returning Hutu. Many more, however, seemed to greet the returnees with Ruziga's air of orderly acceptance and restraint--an outlook that may stem from Rwanda's unique social structure. Unlike most African nations, which were cobbled together by colonial mapmakers, Rwanda was a tightly organized kingdom long before the Europeans arrived. A Tutsi god-king headed an elaborate system of civil administration...

...United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali a second five-year term. The United States is the only nation on the UN Security Council that is fighting Boutros-Ghali's reappointment--and the first Security Council vote on this issue was 14-1. The Clinton administration can barely conceal that it is not opposed to Boutros-Ghali based on ideological reasons or because of disagreements with the policies he has pursued and endorsed. No, the Clinton administration refuses to support Boutros-Ghali because it is afraid of arousing the ire of Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Jesse Helms...

Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of our nature is our natural blindness to it. According to some evolutionary psychologists, we are "designed" by natural selection to conceal selfish motives from ourselves--indeed, to unconsciously build elaborate moral rationales for our selfish behavior. Thus do wars routinely feature two sides convinced that they are in the right...
