...that Russia adopted a "FiveYear Plan." The point is that, spurred by Josef Stalin, Russians have pursued the socialist line of their revolution and tried to bring every function of the national life-from tractors to abortions-under the regulation of a Planned Economic Order. Its basic concept is not one but an endless series of Five-Year Plans, stretching off into remotest future. Jan. 1, 1933 is the date set for completion of the Five-Year Plan about which everyone knows. Generally speaking it has raised Soviet production above the pre-Plan level, which level was from...

When two parties, equally right from their own concept, are diametrically opposed, solution of the problem can hardly be expected independent of an outside agency with sufficient power to enforce its decisions. In the present issue the state government is obviously that outside agency, but the faults of its mediation are fatal to solution. State governments invariably intercede on behalf of the operators, exasperating the miners beyond the possibility of conciliation. Moreover, a state control of mining operations would inevitably lead to unfair disadvantage of operations under its direction. The mining problem has too long been crying for Federal intervention...

His brother Lionel Walter Rothschild Lord Rothschild collects and classifies birds and butterflies, is a much respected zoological systematise Lord Rothschild last week maintained the concept of "flexible species", that "individuals are never alike whatever their relationship to each other." For example he cited the commonest British mouse-flea (Ctenophthalmus agyrtes). "A calculation . . . to find among them two absolutely alike in the number and position of the bristles on the body arrives at the amusing figure of many million billions, a figure certainly in excess of that...

Lenin used the terms "Socialism" and "Communism" as interchangeable synonyms. The basic doctrine behind both words is a concept of society in which the State would own all means of production and private, or "capitalistic," profit would be eliminated. Regrettable is the extreme looseness of meaning which: 1) permits James Ramsay MacDonald to call himself a "Socialist," although he does not strive for State ownership of the means of production; and 2) permits Josef Stalin to be known as a "Communist," although he recently restored to Russian peasants the right of private trade with its inevitable capitalistic profits (TIME...

Interesting as this concept may be, it differs radically from the ideal of what the houses should be. A House is not a fraternity, and no member of it should be required to be the friend of any other member. The House offers, in addition to physical advantages, an opportunity for persons with similar interests to become acquainted, and for this reason it should contain a 'cross-section" representative of all intellectual groups. The House Plan also extends advantages which were once the sole possession of clubs and fraternities to all the members of the college. But a House...
