...also part of the contemporary retreat from the notion of the American melting pot. The phenomenon poses-as it does in the case of blacks, Chicanos and Jews-the question of whether the proliferation of a lot of selfabsorbed, self-contained communities is any improvement over the concept of a common citizenry. Along with the release of pride and energy, the ethnic movement has given rise to a certain insularity and intolerance...

...Paradise is a great film (certainly my favorite), and more worth seeing than anything else around. The characters are both attractively larger- than-life and full of basic human traumas, and they move with point through the rich decay and underworld glamour of Louis-Philippe's Paris. The concept of the film is daringly poetic for film narrative (the characters' developments are seen largely through their own conscious artistic achievements), but fully achieved. It is a brilliantly acted and mimed film about great mimes and actors who really lived and performed in and around the Boulevard of Crime...

Krackow believes strongly in corporate teamwork, which is an old idea in the U.S. but a relatively new concept in traditionally hierarchical German business. Though he works 12-to-14-hour days, he does not raise an eyebrow when lieutenants leave the office at 5 p.m. There are only two things that he will not tolerate: disloyalty and mediocrity. "A corporation is less likely to be ruined by a wrong decision than by creeping mediocrity," he says...

In these men, Wills argues, "liberals at last got the kind of leaders they thought would suffice, and found that this was not enough." Kennedy's concept of "flexible response" led to the most intractable of wars. The Second Vatican Council, initiated by Pope John, began by concentrating on liturgical reform but soon unleashed a flood of theological argument and, among laymen, disillusionment and doubt...

...cared if he had witnessed Of Mice and Men currently showing at the Loeb Drama Center. Though the play mildly captures a sense of feeling. I never felt I was watching the art of Steinbeck. Edward Zwick, Director, has attempted to day so true to Steinbeck's mere "story" concept that he succeeds in presenting a disconnected production which floats above the surface of any lasting import. Whether or not there is meaning to Of Mice and Men, Zwick fails to move his actors towards the limitless emotion of Steinbeck's characters. Consequently, the Loeb version lacks the display...
