...homosexuals--as the Book of Leviticus recommends--would be wrong. That homosexuals are to be treated with kindness, however, does not mean that homosexual acts are in any way condoned by the New Testament. The apostle Paul testifies to one example of this "love the sinner, hate the sin" concept can be seen in I Timothy 1:8-11, 15-16. It reads, "Now we know that the law is good, if any one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners...
What are these "novel" ideas that objectivists defend at all costs? Reason, egoism and laissez-faire capitalism. Objectivists seem to think these concepts are new finds. And what's more, that their demi-goddess, Ayn Rand, stumbled upon them first. Of course, the concept of laissez-faire capitalism has been around for more than a few decades--at least that's what professors in the economics department keep telling me. But, hell, what do they know? And reason and egoism? Well, let's see. Can you say "Plato, Nietzsche, Russell, Sartre...
Everybody loves ELOISE, the Plaza Hotel-dwelling urchin from the book by Kay Thompson. But perhaps ex-con turned innkeeper-to-the-image-conscious Ian Schrager loved her a teensy bit too much. Schrager published a parody of the children's classic in book form as a high-concept promotional brochure for his Miami hostel, the Delano. In Delia at the Delano, by Bob Morris, DELIA, right, sun-dries her own tomatoes, does Barbie liposuction and has a Prada ant farm. It's not unwitty stuff, but Thompson isn't amused. "I think they should be arrested," the nonagenarian eccentric...
When Gomes moves on to such universal issues as suffering, joy and science, some topics are slighted: the section on evil seems loath to admit the traditional concept of Satan, even in order to challenge it. More typical, however, is a cheerily trenchant meditation on wealth ("not a sin, but it is a problem.") Fundamentalists will have little use for this book, but its target audience just may be charmed back into the pews...
...folks in charge will not have the interests of the needy at heart. Anne Arnesan, director of the Council on Children and Families in Wisconsin, which is currently implementing a similar plan, worries about ?making a profit on the backs of the poor.? Some California counties have tested the concept. Orange County, for example, divided its welfare responsibilities between government welfare staffers and a private corporation in an effort to determine which method is more efficient. The results were somewhat surprising, considering that the private sector might be expected to be better at placing workers in business. County workers...
