Pride is a difficult concept to quantify, but for China, the Olympics provide a simple calculation for its ascent. Two decades ago in Seoul, China won just five golds. By 2004 in Athens, the country's 32-medal gold rush was second only to that of the U.S. Now China is hoping its home-turf advantage in Beijing will vault it into first place. ...pricetag." A big reason for Britain's landfill addiction is that it's relatively inexpensive to bury rubbish. But those looming E.U. fines if biodegradable waste limits aren't met are making gasification cost-competitive. Teremok's fare consists not of American-style burgers but of Russian-style blini, the traditional thin pancakes, delivered with chain-restaurant consistency at fast-food prices. For 43 rubles (less...

...original concept and menu haven't changed much in 10 years, but the scale of production has increased dramatically. "If you're chopping 100 kg of mushrooms, you do it one way," Goncharov says. "If it's 200 kg of mushrooms, you do it a totally different way." The company has upgraded factories four times, and now has a 4,000-sq-m site...
