...spare, subtle language of Webern's music must have seemed extraordinarily novel and refreshing to twelve-tone composers, while his concern for highly schematized structure seemed to be the necessary concomitant to an idiom so unlike Western music. The post-Webern school, as its name implies, has carried these methods a good deal further. There was ample evidence of the wide spectrum of this music at a concert held in Paine Hall on Mar. 5, devoted largely to the post-Webern representation at Harvard, which raised some hard questions about the aims and future of advanced music...

What is lacking so conspicuously is a prevalence of warmth, or any real concern for kindness. Warmth seemingly goes against every Harvard grain: it is not characteristic of the East; it appears incompatible with scepticism; and it is ultimately blocked by self-consciousness. It is essentially an enthusiastic attitude. Kindness finds even stronger opposition at Harvard: even taken in its deepest sense, not as a wish to avoid causing pain, but as a constant consideration and valuation of feelings, it contradicts the most sacred critical canons. "The one thing needed-this is the first and in some sense the last answer I can give-is to be concerned ultimately, unconditionally, infinitely . . . If, in the power and passion of such an ultimate concern, we look at our finite concerns, everything seems the same and yet everything is changed . . . The anxiety is gone! It still exists and tries to return. But its power is broken...

...concern about inflation, the Fed worries about the U.S. Treasury's money-raising problems. The Treasury has been forced to hike interest rates on-its short-term Treasury bills to above 2½%, thus tempting commercial banks to "play the spread" by borrowing money from the Federal Reserve at 2½% and putting it into Government securities that yield more. The Fed's discount-rate increase will stop this practice, was timed to take place between Treasury financings so as not to upset the market...
