Three hours to go before the evening's performance and something isn't right. Sitting at a grand piano in St. George's concert hall in Bristol, England, on May 12, Derek Paravicini tears through a rehearsal of The Flight of the Bumblebee, his fingers skittering across the piano keys. The musicians in the Emerald Ensemble orchestra feed off his energy and manage to keep up the pace, but it all sounds a bit off. After several stops and starts, the conductor discovers the problem: the orchestra and the star have been practicing different versions of the same piece...

...Stephen Sondheim's and James Goldman's Follies, might seem in no need of excavation. The original production, in 1971, is well remembered, indeed cherished, by the folks of a certain age who haunt City Center. The fabulous CD is readily available. In the 80s a famous concert version (also on CD) was performed at Carnegie Hall, and just six years ago a not-so-hot Broadway revival - I should say embalming - was on display...

After two albums in French, she has since mostly recorded in English, and recently celebrated her new self-titled album's European release with a private concert at Le Réservoir, a small club on Paris' Right Bank. After adjusting her guitar and donning a harmonica holder, she launched into the new song "Lay Your Head Down," with her four-man band. The performance is being organized by the College Events Board (CEB) and Campus Life Fellow John T. Drake ’06.
