Rock 'n' roll changes people. Some find themselves helplessly screaming for The Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Others fondly recall an angry mob at a Metallica concert chanting "Die, Die, Die." I imagine the screams. Then, I imagine the death chant. I think about the debut album my indie band, The Humming, had just recorded. I picture the screams. Then, again, the death chant. Screams. Debut album. Death chant. Tickets went on sale two days ago for the December 7 Bangles-Dido concert at the Orpheum. Speaking of which, the Bounce trailer with Dido's "Here With Me" playing in the background is manipulative but deadly effective. Everytime Ben Affleck says "I don't have a last call for the day" someone in my various TV-watching groups invariably says "I don't have a last call either" and we all go into a whine...

...planet, on most of his songs there is always a lingering feeling he is sharing an in-joke with the listener - that although he sounds as if he's lived every painful moment of every stanza, he really doesn't mean it. It's an impression brought home in concert, where there is no torture, just a vague awkwardness, as he sings his tortured tunes (indeed, he often jokes on stage about "heart-tugging tearjerkers"). On this song, though, there's not a trace of insincerity...
