Enemies cracked back that General Gamelin did not head an official Commission of Honor but only acted in concert with two veterans' organizations, and that anyhow the still-living French officers of Salengro's regiment all say today in Paris that he was a deserter, and they ought to know. Died. Mme Ernestine Schumann-Heink, 75, famed Austrian-born contralto; of hemorrhage of the throat and lungs, after leukemia; in Hollywood. Daughter of a Major in the Imperial Army, she sang in her first public concert at Graz at 15, earned $6. In 1878 she won a debut and a four-year contract at Dresden, was chosen by Cosima Wagner to sing at Bayreuth before she was brought to Manhattan's Metropolitan Opera Company in 1898. During the War her son August died as a German sailor, her sons Henry and George Washington enlisted with the U. S. Navy...
