Steve Allen will host the series of summertime music festivals, with "Casals in Puerto Rico" coming first. Ninety-two-year-old Cellist Pablo Casals conducts Mozart's Symphony No. 38 in D Major ("The Prague") and Brahms' Concerto in A Minor for violin, cello and orchestra, with Yehudi Menuhin and Leslie Parvas...
...polychromatic sounds of momentary durations. The fluid immediacy of impresssonism and the starker psychology of expressionism began to lose their distinctiveness and prove permeable and complementary. The last magnificent statements of the musical expressionistic esthetic were Alban Berg's operas Wozzeck (1921) and Lulu (1935), and his Violin Concerto (1935), an elegy written upon the death on Mahler's daughter Manon. The neurasthenic romanticism of Mahler was transmuted in these works to a testament and a valedictory. The plasticity of musical idioms was clearly responding to a mellower comprehension of what had happened to man as a result...

The antiphonal Gabrieli suffered from a slight lack of vitality, but at least avoided the exaggerated vivacity which often vulgarizes his works. Schutz's great Psalm, a polychoral, instrumentally supported work in concerto style, was distinguished for its sensitive singing and generally excellent brass playing. But the Sweelinck provided the evening's finest performance. Here purity of syllable, beauty of phrase, ease in the high soprano tessitura, and highly intelligent conducting elicited the complex polyphony of the piece...

Recorded in the Philadelphia Academy of Music rather than in the ballroom used by Columbia, their sound is often dry and devoid of the luster for which the orchestra is famous. Charles Ives' Third Symphony and an LP of Grieg and Liszt concertos with Pianist Van Cliburn as soloist are the best of the lot. But the Chopin F-minor Concerto with Artur Rubinstein is heavy and graceless, and Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony lacks the bite and immediacy of a nine-year-old version that Columbia re-engineered and rereleased last year...
