Acclaimed science-fiction writer Chevalier (Jermaine Clement, the stockier half of the “Flight of the Conchords?? duo) also sees potential in “Yeast Lords.” Facing the end of his career, he receives the story as a submission for a writing contest and decides to publish it under his own name. Benjamin, feeling betrayed by both Tabatha and Chevalier, his idol, wanders aimlessly for a while until he finally decides to take a stand...
Most of the absurdity comes from the dialogue and props, while the acting remains deadpan. Clement, as Chevalier, recycles his character from “Flight of the Conchords?? (which basically involves as little emotion as possible), simply adding feathers, weird leather ensembles, and an earpiece to become the science-fiction god. The rest of the actors follow suit, with the notable exception of indie veteran Jennifer Coolidge, who plays Benjamin’s bubbly, excitable mother. The unabating deadpan irony, when combined with the ludicrous plot, serve to estrange the characters from us rather than endearing them...
...theatricality. The band members begin in an overcrowded cardboard box doing “cool” things like reading Borges and taking Polaroid shots of each other. A girl with two long braids (you’ll recognize her as Mel from “Flight of the Conchords??) and a man decked out in tan flannel travel from Tokyo to Paris in another cardboard box. The deliveries of weapons labeled “mutiny” to a furry unicorn and a comely bear reveal the ultimate literality of this video; the plot sequence sticks closely...
Sadly, the album manages to get much worse than this. “The King of Hell” is shockingly bad, coming off as closer to “Flight of the Conchords?? than Bob Dylan. “Saint Isabelle” also offers plenty of unwilling comedy. Its chorus, “I will always stand beside you, defend you and mend you, sanctify you,” might have seemed romantic in 13th-century France, but anyone born since then will recognize it as ridiculous...
