...with a very cool logo, is to go on the air next March with a vague, general-entertainment mandate and a lot of live emcees who will -- this is the New Age, 21st century part -- read viewers' faxed messages on the air. Like ESPN with ESPN2, NBC will concoct a quasi- clone of its existing cable channel CNBC; last week the network named the amusingly ferocious Republican media genius Roger Ailes both to run CNBC and $ to create a new all-talk channel, to be called, unfortunately, America's Talking...
...also ushered in some drug novelties. Since the turn of the decade, gamma hydroxy butyrate, known as GHB, has been used illegally in the body-building community to reduce fat. Recently, however, youths have begun to abuse the drug to achieve a trancelike state. In New York City kids concoct a "Max" cocktail by dissolving GHB in water, then mixing in amphetamines. A different mix resulted in several overdoses in the Atlanta area in the past few months. Manhattan's hard-core sex community has also turned on to "Special K," or Cat Valium, an anesthetic that numbs the body...

Stations hardly need a true-life drama, however, to concoct a bogus news tie-in. Last week's Academy of Country Music Awards on NBC gave Atlanta's WXIA-TV a chance to interview singers Travis Tritt and Doug Stone on the urgent subject of "why country music is so popular." New York's WABC-TV used a Kathie Lee Gifford special on motherhood as the pretext for a feature on her TV partner Regis Philbin's exercise regimen...
Psychologists concoct some absurd situations to plumb the depths of chimp insight. For instance, one experiment has the apes observe two handlers deliver cups of juice. One accidentally spills juice on the floor; the other overturns the cup deliberately. When asked to choose a handler to deliver their next cup of juice, chimps prefer the clumsy person, suggesting that they are aware they are better off with a klutz than with a helper with evil intent. Again, in analogous experiments capuchin monkeys appear to be less shrewd. The animals will, pitiably, continue to put their trust in a human helper...
