Frustrated in its efforts to win the hostages' release, the U.S. continued its diplomatic efforts to isolate Iran as an outlaw state. Initially Carter was described by an aide as "disgusted but not surprised" by the failure of U.S. allies to condemn Iran publicly. ...Animal Liberation, deny that a human may be more worthy of respect than a zebra or mosquito. What I condemn as "speciesism" is the attitude that the interests of animals of other species are less important than similar interests of humans. Humans have many interests that zebras and mosquitoes don't-their careers, the pursuit of knowledge, artistic interests-and these may entitle them to extra respect. But these interests cannot justify forcing animals to lead miserable lives in today's factory farms just because we like the taste of their flesh...

...CONDEMN Ayatollah Khomeini's support of the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Teheran. But we believe the United States should be prudent in its response to the steadily worsening situation; it should put saving the 60 hostages' lives before political retaliation. Military intervention of any kind should be rejected as an impractical option because it is doubtful it would save lives. Instead, the United States should work within the international community through diplomatic channels to secure the release of the hostages.
