There are those who condemn the shameless disregard for our national holidays. Memorial Day, after all, should be a time to honor and reflect. Instead, it has become synonymous with hot dogs, hamburgers and lighter fluid. But condemnation only polarizes and inflames while leaving the underlying problem unaddressed. The plain truth remains that for many Americans, several of our national holidays have become irrelevant. In the spirit of maintaining a vital and meaningful civic culture, maybe it's time we made some changes. Here are some suggestions...

Second, we do not condemn all Orthodox Jews for the actions of several radical individuals, so why do we condemn all Islamic movements for the actions of isolated groups? Yes, the man who massacred Palestinians in the Hebron mosque was probably violating every important tenet of Orthodox Judaism. It would be unfair to characterize all of Orthodox Judaism based on the actions of this one individual. Likewise, it is unfair to characterize every grass roots Islamic group as terrorists. True, some Islamic groups are fanatical terrorists--the Taliban in Afghanistan, for example. However, that does not preclude the existence...

...fact, if our fellow citizens chose, they can do what they did when many of them disapproved of interracial and interfaith marriages. They can sit at home, loudly condemn us, pray for us and express their disgust. But let us be very clear, their beliefs and disapproval are not grounds to commit a grave injustice to millions of their fellow citizens. Gay and lesbian Americans should be accorded the same rights as other Americans...no more, but certainly no less...
