Well, it's time to shatter that idealized myth. When Columbus arrived on Cuba, Hispaniola and other islands in the Caribbean he instituted shockingly cruel and genocidal policies which rapidly decimated the populations of indigenous Arawak Indians. He was also a slave trader, and his own words condemn him. Furthermore, the claim that he "discovered" the New World is dubious--he accidentally came into contact with a culture that had existed for hundreds if not thousands of years...

Perhaps Agnew deserves a better remembrance. Although he did take cash bribes while vice president, he never ruthlessly carpet-bombed Indochinese civillians, nor did he condemn American youth to die in a needless war for political reasons. He didn't illegally marshal the resources of the CIA, FBI, IRS, FCC and the Justice Department against the news media and his political opponents. Compared to Tricky Dick, J. Edgar Hoover, Henry Kissinger '50, John Mitchell and other seriously and criminally depraved goons of Nixon's administration, Agnew was a petty thug...

Last Year, without consulting any of my constituents on the issue, I voted to condemn the administration for violating its non-discrimination policy by allowing ROTC to hold its annual commissioning ceremony in Harvard Yard. I thought moving ROTC ceremonies off campus to respect the rights of gay and lesbian graduates was more important than the symbolic value of being commissioned within the Yard. What do you think...
