Although Chad's 52% Muslim majority, as well as its 5% Christian minority, condemn the pagan rites, no effective opposition has been organized. A secret meeting of Chad's church leaders was held in August. They are under the tight control of the dictatorship; dissident professors are fired and sometimes tortured until they renounce their political views. Students are forced to study what the Shah considers his great achievements as a ruler, and their protests usually result in arrests or injuries...
