Usage:

Rather than condemn the process per se, most of those who oppose genetic engineering do so with an eye to the modifications it allows. Preventing diseases is one thing, but the same procedure can also be used to prevent any condition the parents find inconvenient. Assuming such traits are controlled by genes, would it be acceptable to prevent manic depression, or even (to shy away from controversy) homosexuality? If we endorse genetic engineering, would we have to accept a world where children are made to order, with good looks, smarts and Aryan features to boot...

That was a big mistake. The lurid stories that ensued about Internet baby buying provoked Prime Minister Tony Blair to condemn the affair as "absolutely deplorable" and to promise quick reforms in British law. Follow-up stories painted the Kilshaws as difficult neighbors with a dirty, animal-filled house that they had once had "ghostbusted" by investigators of the paranormal. They were accused of being so eager to argue about the babies with the Allens through international TV hookups as to neglect them in real life. The stories were one-sided, but the Kilshaws hurt themselves by trumpeting their conversations...

...Yugoslavia and the reaction of the Western powers to the new President. In a democratic process, the people of Serbia voted against the economic failures and corruption of the Milosovic era but voted for a candidate of equal nationalist fervor and hence retained the ideas we all abhor and condemn. The West, which has for so long rejected Milosovic, now has embraced (rather too quickly) both a man who embodies the darker aspects of Serbian ultranationalism and a nation that still believes in it.
