It was approved by a House committee last week, three days after Israel attacked an alleged Palestinian terrorist camp outside Damascus--an act Bush, notably, did not condemn. Syria may also be courting economic isolation: its banks could face Bush-imposed sanctions under the Patriot Act, which would effectively bar them from world capital markets. Warns the senior official: "We have made it plain that if access to records and cooperation continue to be restricted, we reserve...

Following the act, Syria urged the U.N. to condemn the air strike, maintaining that it violated the U.N. charter as well as the 1974 disengagement agreement that followed the 1973 Yom Kippur war. Similarly, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder denounced the attack, as did various leaders from Arab nations. Here in the United States, however, the Bush administration supported Israel’s attack as a fair defense tactic. A fierce critic of Israel and U.S. Middle East policy, the Jerusalem-born author and scholar advocated a single, binational state for "dispossessed" Palestinians. Though he repudiated terrorism generally, he drew ire for his refusal to condemn specific violent acts by Palestinians. The author of the influential study Orientalism, which argued that Westerners distorted and demeaned Middle Eastern culture by stereotyping, Said lived most of his life in the U.S., married a Quaker and for a time reviewed music for the Nation, acknowledging that he often felt...
