After Hodgkinson's applause-accompanied exit from the stage and the discreet lowering of the lid of his piano, conductor James Yannatos took his place in front and led the orchestra into--surprise--Dallapiccola's Variations for Orchestra, a reiteration of the themes that had just resounded from the piano. If the atonal phrases had been disjointed in the piano score, they were fully severed and disconcertingly tossed together in the full orchestral rendition. A concerto is something that you have to put together with a conductor and orchestra, and so the success depends on the nature of the compromises made--how willing the conductor is to let you do your thing. In a recital you perform for longer, have an expanded sense of the repertoire, and express a greater variety of musical ideas. The difference between playing for 25 and 75 minutes is immense.
