...Serb leader, Slobodan Milosevic, bears primary responsibility for the coming conflagration, as he does for the war in Bosnia. He is behind the repression visited on the ethnic Albanians by the ruling Serb minority, which has a fondness for torturing confessions out of the rebels. Sitting in his family's small apartment in downtown Pristina, Alban Neziri, 23, coolly, methodically narrates his harrowing story. He says he was arrested last February as a suspected founding member of the K.L.A. and during his 10 months in prison was repeatedly tortured. "At the beginning, they beat me with plastic batons...

GENTLEMEN: I must confess serious doubts about the efficacy--or even the integrity--of the "classic" exam period editorial, "Beating the System," you reprinted recently. I almost suspect this so-called "Donald Carswell '50' of being rather one of Us--the Bad Guys--than one of you. Last September some reporters openly criticized the (non-Tibetan) organizers of his trip to Australia because of their $20 T shirts and official sponsorship from Nike, Thai International Airlines and Ford. ...soon. This is not only because of the public's almost irrational fear of anything nuclear--or the threats of stepped-up opposition by such anti-irradiation activists as the Vermont-based group Food & Water. Even major food companies, while publicly lauding the FDA decision as long overdue, privately confess they are not all that eager to implement it. Before investing in the costly shielded radiation rooms that will be needed to sterilize fresh or frozen meat on an assembly-line basis (and will add 3[cents] or 4[cents] to the retail price of chopped sirloin), they want...

...summarize as the contributions of his or her life. Sometimes goodness comes out in a crisis, when the most unexpected people astonish us with unpredictable compassion. And sometimes, it shows at those moments when you happen to stumble into the deeper part of other people's lives--when they confess a secret love or ambition to you, or when you see a beautiful birthday card lying half-written on a desk, or when you catch them alone crying or in a moment of private prayer...
