...plan was killed 10 years ago, and she was clearly pained-nonplussed by the quality of anger, the sheer hatred, directed against her. That experience would be a walk in the park compared to the vitriol if she ran for President. And while I'd love to see someone confront, and defeat, the free-range haters on the right, the last thing we need is a campaign that would polarize the nation even more. Indeed, we could use the exact opposite-a candidate who would inspire America's centrist majority to rise up against the extreme special interests in both...
...commend TIME for its outstanding article on America's top five large-city mayors [April 25]. Too often we must confront the unethical or outright illegal conduct of our politicians. Those five individuals truly represent what it is to be a public servant by putting the needs of their constituents above their own. Should I ignore slurs like “faggot” as I walk around on campus, or should I confront them? Which is more important, standing up for my community or preserving my health...
...second time in a decade, energy scare stories have become the stuff of headlines: motorists who confront the prospect of a summer of gasoline shortages at $1 per gal.; homeowners who have visions of dollar bills fluttering up the chimney every time the oil burner in the basement trips on. Angry and resentful, people are blaming the one institution that not only grows richer every time there is an oil squeeze, but is as close at hand as the nearest service station: the $360 billion-a-year U.S. oil industry ... All around the U.S., the lament is the same...
