...Clinton spent his first 100 days bouncing between a series of blunders: unsuccessful Attorney General nominations, Hillary Clinton's failed health-care reform, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the botched Branch Davidian raid in Waco, Texas. President George W. Bush presented a $1.96 trillion budget plan to Congress, created an Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and halted federal funding for international organizations that offered family-planning services...
Rotten economy? Not if you're in the business of radically overhauling American government. Between the Obama Administration and Congress, the assembly line for Big Ideas is running triple shifts, cranking out stimulus plans, bank-rescue plans, foreclosure-prevention plans, health-care-reform plans, alternative-energy plans, auto-industry-reorganization plans, climate-protection plans, Afghanistan-war plans, Pentagon-spending plans - and that's just the first 100 days...
...several members of Congress were eyeing next year's contest, especially as it seemed more and more likely that Specter would lose to conservative activist and former Congressman Pat Toomey, who would be a much easier target in the increasingly Democratic state. Ahesan accused Modi and 62 others of hatching a "well-executed and sinister criminal conspiracy" to effect a "deliberate and intentional failure" of the state government to protect the life and property of its citizens. Says New Delhi-based political analyst Amulya Ganguli: "Modi tried his best to scuttle the investigation - some 2,000 cases were closed...
...archrival, the ruling Congress Party, immediately demanded Modi's resignation. But the BJP dismissed such calls, with general secretary Arun Jaitley claiming, "There is nothing against Modi," and that none of the investigations conducted by the Gujarati government had cited him. Jaitley also hinted at a conspiracy behind the timing of the court ruling, claiming that in the past, various reports targeting the BJP have been released at critical phases of elections. (Several key states have yet to vote.) Many observers point out, however, that most of these types of decisions actually came out in the BJP's favor...
