...foul name. We were fitting an analytical classification to his amoral discourse about our country's sad history of violating black folks' humanity under Southern slavocracy and modern racism. This is no different than the classification that Native Americans put around the slaughter of their ancestors during the European conquest of North America and the subsequent "pacification" during the formative years of the American republic--that classification being "genocide" and thus those perpetrating this being "genocidists." Similarly, our classification of Jeffrey Vanke's amoral discourse was no different than the analytical classification that Jewish-Americans and Jews generally put around...

...struggle to preserve the "peculiar institution" of slavery was an attempt to resist the democratic ideals sweeping the Western world. While other enlightened nations were rejecting the barbarity of human bondage, the South still clung to the remnants of a shameful past. Likewise, Nazi Germany's visions of world conquest and racial purity were a return to the savageness of the Dark Ages...

Perhaps it isn't the act of hollow sex which itself is so base. Perhaps it is the notion of it, even at Harvard, as an act that calls forth pride enough to don a pin and strut like a peacock. The celebratory reception of sexual conquest in the drinking culture is quite barbaric. Can men's sexual indulgence represent anything more than a pillage of females given their propensity to speak of in it terms of booty? Obviously, sex has no meaning to them beside its pleasurable...

Just because most scholars no longer accept Joshua's war of conquest, though, doesn't mean the question is settled by any means. Conservatives have plenty of ideas about how the tide could swing back to a more biblical interpretation. Experts like Abraham Malamat, a biblical historian at the Hebrew University, suggest that no evidence exists of destruction at Ai, for example, because the city was in a different location 3,000 years ago. Bryant Wood, director of the pro-Bible Associates for Biblical Research, insists that his own research supports Joshua's assault on Jericho. Perhaps, he suggests, Kathleen...
