This spring, the Faculty, too, has the right to back down on the council's ROTC ultimatum. But they must not--for reasons far greater than loss of face. The ROTC ultimatum was not issued by a single executive without representative consent. It was issued by a coalition of dean, president and elected representatives of the Faculty. The council debated and thought hard before passing it. As such, the threat has far more legitimacy than the commitment of troops by a commander-in-chief...
Last week a federal appeals court set the stage for that collision when it upheld most of Pennsylvania's law, putting that statute first in line for possible review by the high court. The lower court approved provisions of the law requiring parental consent for minors and a 24-hour waiting period before abortions, but struck down a provision requiring husbands to give their consent when their wives seek an abortion. Though the Justices could uphold the Pennsylvania statute without overturning Roe, the decision will be closely watched for signs that the arrival of Clarence Thomas has consolidated a high...

According to the Hernandezes' lawsuit, the youngster was secretly given up for adoption by his mother, who never had formal custody. Contacted by TIME, Kutz insisted the adoption was "100% honest" but refused...

Even in 1991, women are still being labeled as the provocateurs in the realm of sexual harassment. For one reason or another, a woman who makes such allegations is assumed to be crazy, vindictive, or the stereotypical "Woman in the Attic." This case is no different from others. As the senators questioned Hill, they suggested in their tone, "Little girl, are you sure you're not lying...
Thomas should be confirmed. Nothing could send a more powerful message to would-be dirt-diggers and rumor-mongers that the Senate's advise and consent function will not be further corrupted...
