...it’s looking as though that prediction might be a little hasty. Rosenberg isn’t trying to retire the Democratic Party and consign it to institutional obsolescence; he’s campaigning to lead the thing. The same goes for MoveOn. They’re not out to supplant the Dems, just to get them to adopt a more grassroots orientation...

That's not much comfort, though, to Iraqi citizens, who are increasingly worried that the June 30 handover will consign them to chaos. No one likes having U.S. troops on the ground, but almost everyone involved views their presence as necessary for months, if not years, to come. "If you go anywhere in Iraq," says a senior U.S. military official in Baghdad, "Iraqis who hate the occupation say they don't want U.S. forces to leave." Even Shi'ite leader Ayatullah Sistani has intimated that U.S. troops are still needed to stabilize the country...

He reportedly fumed at having to watch the Aqaba summit on TV from Ramallah, the White House having done its best to use President Bush's first-ever Middle East trip to crown Abbas as the new national leader of the Palestinians and consign Arafat to the dustbin of history. Bush pulled no punches during his stay in Egypt, telling a local TV network that "it's impossible to achieve peace with Chairman Arafat." Arafat's objective, by contrast, is to prove that peace is impossible without him. Washington's Arab and European allies...

...during his interview with NBC's Tom Brokaw three weeks ago. A Bush friend tells TIME that the President "wanted to take a big swipe" at Gingrich during the interview--but Brokaw never brought up the subject. According to an Administration aide, Bush's remarks were going to consign the former Speaker to the cohort of "babbling, divisive people" who have criticized the war. "He wasn't going to mention [Gingrich] by name," says the aide, "but it was going to be very clear." --By John F. Dickerson
