Although it is called volleyball, there are some signal differences between the seaside sport and the amateur game played in schools and in the Olympics. Regular volleyball employs six players a side on a hard-surface court, while beach teams consist of only two usually bare-foot acrobats who charge through the sand to get to the ball, giving the game the flavor of balletic misdemeanor. The ball used on the beach is somewhat heavier than the indoor one, mainly to counteract the effects of sea breezes. The object of both games is to make the ball hit the floor...

...some ways a dangerous sport too, but less for the fish than for the angler's relatives. Fly-fishermen can quickly become world-class bores. Solitude becomes an end in itself. Spouses bristle at the suggestion that family vacations should consist of two weeks at some bug-infested fishing camp in Forsaken, Mont. Dinner-party invitations trail off as conversation seems to center on the pleasures of fishing nymphs in deep riffles or the relative merits of bamboo and graphite fly rods. Children growl at the proposal that the backyard pool be returned to nature and converted to a trout...

Major help in studying the earth's environment is expected to emerge from a project being planned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Called Mission to Planet Earth, the program would consist of a series of satellite flights designed to monitor the earth with sensitive instruments that measure such vital signs as temperature, winds and atmospheric chemistry. These readings would add immensely to the knowledge gained from high- resolution photography alone. The object is to understand the planet's dynamics well enough to anticipate ecological disasters -- and find ways to forestall them. The project was suggested...

Attempts at economic and political reform in China, the Soviet Union and other Communist countries often seem to consist of two steps forward and one or even two steps back. In China the recent rash of student-led mass demonstrations is just the latest manifestation of deep public discontent over the price of economic reform. In the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev's position has been similarly threatened as the benefits of perestroika have thus far failed to match the short-term costs...
