Undeniably, the student groups have made the end of film-showing imminent by their actions. In an atmosphere of constant squabble, one organization's charges against another for unfair competition or cut-throat tactics has prejudiced the Faculty Committee against all groups. Either insensitiveness or indifference to this has placed the organizations in the tenuous position they now hold. A good example is the meager attempt for reconciliation last week. The UN Council and the HLU stated that they were ready for some kind of agreement, and even exchanged films in violation of the releaser's contract...
...other hand, these two are allowed to proceed in disregard one for the other, you then create a situation either of doubtful military strength, or of such precarious economic strength that your military position is in constant jeopardy. It has been the purpose of this Administration ever since it took office, finding itself confronted with a crazy quilt of promises, commitments and contracts, to bring American military logic and American economic logic into joint, strong harness...
...definitely in the minority. The facile old excuse?"Personally, I don't care, but the customers just wouldn't stand for Negroes to come in here"?has been proved empty again & again. The chief trouble is that the Negro can never be sure: he is in a constant guerrilla war, always half-expecting to be snubbed by this desk clerk or that headwaiter, or fobbed off with a gentlemen's-agreement type of spiel that all the tables have been reserved, all the rooms taken. Many Negroes prefer not to risk being embarrassed, stay away from predominantly white places...
...essence of their charm. Observe, for instance, the mainstay of any Chinese meal, shrimp with lobster sauce. On a base of shrimp, the dish features lobster sauce, made of pork, egg, cornstarch--for body--and a gentle hint of garlic. Naturally, this recipe varies with each restaurant, the only constant factor being the absence of lobster as an ingredient. The flavor is delicate, mingling the bite of garlic with the pork's meaty savor. Excellent with rice, the sauce can readily serve as an order in itself, but when combined with some seafood, it seems to gain flavor...
When the WAAC was first organized, Congress grudgingly admitted that women could do 54 different Army jobs; under Oveta's constant nudging, they eventually came to fill 239 types of jobs-almost the whole sweep of noncombatant military duties. When the WAC was a year old, she proudly escorted Commander in Chief Franklin Roosevelt on his first full-dress review of the Corps. By 1944, WAC headquarters had requests for 600,000 women-more than three times the authorized strength of the Corps-from commanders all over the world...
