Urban Machine. To the chagrin of some Parisians, the competition was won by two foreigners, Italy's Renzo Piano and Britain's Richard Rogers. In the midst of Beaubourg's crumbling brick and mortar, they proceeded to construct what they called a "living urban machine." They planned a six-story building to be formed literally inside out -structural supports on the outside, along with a formidable array of ducts, gantries, movable mezzanines and color-coded pipes for heating, electricity, air conditioning and fire control. Attached to one external facade is a huge escalator with transparent walls, illustrating...
...madness and leave it at that. The Throne is a series of chairs, tables, little altars and tablets, all elaborately decorated in tin foil. It was created by James Hampton, a black, Washington D.C. janitor who apparently saved all of the tin foil he found on the job to construct his tribute to the second coming of Christ. Hampton built this set-piece in a poorly lit, unheated garage in D.C. He took just about anything he found to design an almost symmetrical arrangement of over 180 pieces. In the center and in back is a larger throne...
...will come on January 25 at 9:15 when the major pre-med course, Chemistry 20, more endearingly known as "Organic," meets for its examination. Spectators at this exam are advised to bring molecular model kits with which to build functional airplanes and ships while real students try to construct benzene rings...
...exhausting film to watch, you want to watch it over and over after it's finished. Kane is the object lesson in American movies--in itself, in legend, in its tradition. It's not the starting point, but the center around which everything else moves. It's a construct, not a natural--a device, not entertainment and it's never been a great popular success. Too self-serious to project a world of beauty into which one would want to project oneself, Kane is too dark and heaving a work to have dignity; Kane's immaturity makes it condemnatory...
...Cent Milie Milliards de Poems (A Hundred Thousand Billion Poems), written by the late Raymond Queneau, a novelist (Zazie dans le Metro) and co-founder of OuLiPo. The book consists of ten sonnets, ingeniously sliced into 14 strips. By flipping the strips left or right, the reader can construct 1014 intelligible poems. OuLiPo's lunatic fringework also included spoonerisms-deliberate slips of the tongue that gave different leanings to mexicons. Tales were written by the "decision tree" method used in programming computers, presenting the reader with choices. For example, Queneau's A Tale in Your Own Fashion begins...
