One of the men inside reached into a bag, while another lunged for one of the officers' guns. Both men were shot repeatedly. The bag turned out to contain a powerful pipe bomb, one of several in the apartment. The suspect had succeeded in flicking one of four toggle switches needed to detonate...

Assertions that it does are based on a tiny grain of scientific truth. Shark cartilage--and cow cartilage, for that matter--does contain minute quantities of a compound that inhibits blood-vessel growth, and tumors depend on the rapid growth of internal blood vessels that can feed them. But this substance is locked up in the cartilage and doesn't leak out to the rest of the body. Voicing disgust at police for concentrating their suspicions on him and his family, Ramsey disclosed that his 10-member legal team was pursuing an assortment of "solid" outside leads. To scientists, the duo's whitish hues suggest that they may be sedimentary rocks. "That would be awesome," says Ken Edgett, an Arizona State University geologist, "because sedimentary rock is the kind of thing that forms under water. And when you have water that sits around for a long time and sediments pour into it, the possibility of preserving fossils goes...
