Designed for a population of 1,782, Folsom today struggles to contain 3,036 maximum-security convicts, the meanest of the mean in violent crime. On the main blocks, two inmates are jammed into each of the 6-ft. by 8 ½ -ft. cells. Less than half work or attend classes. The others mainly watch daytime television and frequently turn their idle nothing-to-lose ferocity against one another. Homosexual rape has long been commonplace, and stabbings are now epidemic, averaging 19 a month, in contrast to about nine a month in 1984. Assailants wield sharpened combs and toothbrushes, melted...

There has so far been just one remark able success in the otherwise losing battle to contain the spread of AIDS. That is the rapid development of tests to detect signs of the virus in donor blood. Despite the increasingly vocal public concern, laissez-faire Houston does not appear to be at all ready to enact the sort of comprehensive zoning laws that have helped contain the porn industry in some other cities. After closing down one particularly offensive club, Civic Activist Frank Phelps, 65, said that even though many sex-prone businesses remained in his area, residents could "live with what we've got." The remaining joints, said Phelps, "don't have the hideous signs up, and they don't advertise, and they are down near the freeway, away from the residential area." Translation...

...over the course of this slim novella is a sort of chamber work on the way women talk to each other and experience their place in the world. Satrapi reflects the way the conversations dovetail with each by having the images do the same. Eschewing panels altogether, most pages contain only two or three images or one full-page image, removing the rigid linearity of a grid layout. Even with the greater amount of space this affords her, Satrapi sticks with the simple illustrative style of her previous works. Clearly something of a "make-do" cartoonist, her artwork nevertheless...
