Usage:

This is not to deny that the men who resist the will of their captors often perform feats of heroism and that some would hold themselves in contempt if they failed to try. The struggle against the captor can become an obsessive way to assert one's defiance of a hostile universe. But the majority of men are not assailed by such temptations of existential heroism. For the most part, the U.S. serviceman fights hard, risks his life and sometimes gives it in the service of his country. It seems unreasonable to ask him to continue risking his life...

...unoriginal note of cannibalism borrowed from all sorts of other apocalyptic visions (notably that of novelist Anthony Burgess). Godard attempts simultaneously to explode the basic esthetic of narrative cinema, but offers nothing in its place; here he is dishonest with himself because the first half-hour shows (as did Contempt and Pierrot le Fou) that the man can cut a narrative like nobody's business when he puts his mind to it. ...Jones claimed that Newark police planted two guns in his car. Without deciding the dispute, the three appeals justices ruled that Essex County Judge Leon W. Kapp gave a "devastatingly improper and fatally unfair" charge to the jury. Kapp had also sentenced Jones to 30 days in prison for contempt after the playwright reacted to a ruling from the bench with what the judge termed "an epithet descriptive of excrement." The superior court, maintaining that Jones had not been given an opportunity to be heard, also ordered a new trial on the contempt charge...

...contempt for its audience, the film cannot be bothered with such nice ties as acting. Men like Brando and Burton are never entirely inept, but of all the performers, only Ewa Aulin in the title role comes off unstained-and that is because she is only called upon to look up, lie down and writhe her thighs. "Good Grief, it's Candy," says the ad for the film. The film itself says, Good Candy, it's Grief...
