...government will rest content until it has eradicated capitalism." Thus in 1933 the founders of Canada's socialist movement, the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, set forth their party's basic political aim in their first manifesto. Last week, at a convention in Winnipeg, an older and wiser CCF gave up the goal of uprooting capitalism and adopted a new manifesto recognizing a definite "need for private enterprise...

...main trouble is that Director John R. Woodruff and his cast have failed to make their acting natural and spontaneous enough. Almost every role is tinged with didacticism; the actors seem obviously to be reciting lines from a play. ...richest, reddest carpet in Russia was none too good for the feet of the visiting Shah of Iran and his beauteous Queen Saroya when they arrived in Moscow last month. Unlike other foreign dignitaries who must be content with billets in the city's hotels or embassies, Iran's rulers, the first sovereigns to visit the Russian capital since 1928 (when the Shah of Afghanistan dropped by) were put up in an apartment within the walls of the Kremlin itself. New bathrooms were installed, to make the place fit for a king. The purpose of all this...
