Chabrol's perception is expressed through the heightened reality of genre art. Though the content and characterization often lead to subtle truths relevant to all of us, the surface of the films often seems wildly extreme--Chabrol's characters retreating into their personal defenses and eccentricities. Chris and Paul (Champagne Murders) play practical jokes, succumb to occasional nervous ticks, and consume liquor, yachts, and television with truly warped relish. Frederique in Les Biches is introduced as a lesbian, extremely boldly characterized; but Chabrol finally considers her "as normal as anybody these days," and her seemingly docile companion Why turns...
Colburn faced a field which included two Olympians and two former IC4A champions in the 1000. He was content to stay behind over a fast first quarter, but gradually moved up to third with two laps to go. A sudden move over the last lap carried him past Bob Zieminski, but fell short of Herb Germann by less than a foot. Both were timed in 2:09.3, bettering the previous record of 2:10.4 held jointly by Colburn and the legendary George Burns...
...Serpent, if one ignores the form in favor of the content (not an easy thing to do), inquires into the source, nature and existence of guilt, leaping back in time from James Earl Ray and Sirhan Sirhan to Cain. Ideas wander idly in and out of the action. At all point's the company stretches its physical resources to the limit, and proves itself an unusually well-coordinated lot. Although The Open Theatre doesn't go in for the acrobatics encouraged by Julian Beck and his crowd, these performers seem every bit as able as their Living Theatre counterparts...

That is difficult, says Furman, since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has forbidden food manufacturers to state the polyunsaturated fat content on the labels of their cooking oils and margarines. The FDA contends that such a statement is meant as a health claim, and would be so regarded by consumers. The ban, says Furman, denies the buyer information to which he is entitled...
...undeserved in my judgment--a few months ago when it was made to appear that a majority of Harvard men would take the draft laws into their own hands. Equally disturbing must be the knowledge that there are brilliant young Harvard men with God-given leadership abilities who seem content to waste two years of their life by allowing themselves to be drafted as a private...
