...reality in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, however, is something else again. Over 80 per cent of the country was and still is under martial law. Those escorts were at least as coercive as anything the Patriotic Front did to disrupt the elections. And beyond any coercion, the voting itself was form without content. Blacks did not get to vote on the constitution under which Biship Muzorewa will be taking power--that was drawn up by Ian Smith's regime and passed on by just the whites (5 per cent of the population). That constitution leaves control of the military, judiciary, and police...

...shortage, and aides distributed the DOE's newly completed "Report to the President on Gasoline Supplies for California," which suggested that Brown could act on his own to relieve the problem. By relaxing some state environmental regulations that are stricter than federal standards, such as on the lead content of gasoline, and strictly enforcing the 55 m.p.h. speed limit, California could save an estimated 55,000 bbl. of gasoline per day. ...introduction. A onetime Moscow correspondent for the Times and author of a book entitled War Between Russia and China, he responded with a blistering attack. "Louis is a longstanding and experienced KGB agent," Salisbury charges in a 14-page "dissenting introduction," and his creation "is a book of spurious content, dubious logic, flagrant untruth . . . ...Singapore is a hallucinatory panorama of burning buildings, crossed telephone lines and panicky scrambles to get aboard any departing boat. It is a rich and poignant chronicle, and Farrell has researched it down to the last palm-oil statistic. If only he had been content to write history instead of fiction. For the book is not so much imagined as documented. Plot developments, like Singapore rickshas, serve to convey the reader from one exhibit to another. On your right are the rubber industry warehouses, repositories of greed; ahead is Chinatown; up the hill is Tanglin the English colony...

Osborn's new book displays an unfortunate tendency to unity of form and content. Sam Weston, a fledgling associate at Bass and Marshall, is somewhat at sea in what Osborn portrays as a paranoid, chaotic world of a Wall Street firm. Likewise, Osborn's writing flounders--his conversational tone includes all the usual non-sequiturs, flaws of grammar, and fragmented sentences, and none of the spontaneity. His imagery floats aimlessly is a sea of conventionality, occasionally grasping at some hapless metaphor and squeezing the life from...
