...frozen in an accident on his wedding day in 1929 and is defrosted in the Socialist world-state in 1979. This plot is barely intelligible in Peter Sellar's frenzied production, however. Mayakovsky's satire works mostly through verse, parody and puns--Sellars in effect obliterates all verbal content in frantic pursuit of visual pyrotechnics. Admittedly, The Bedbug demands to be staged as spectacle, but Mayakovsky also valued his words. Sellars' production reduces them to high-speed spurts of incomprehensibility...

...expect from the Juilliard, and they are not necessarily the best qualities for Haydn. But the surprise of this set is the mellowness and suppleness, the emotional inwardness of the performances. All to the good, since these are pivotal works. In them the 40-year-old Haydn deepened the content of his lightly ingratiating early quartets, incorporating folk tunes into a more tightly woven texture and often finishing off with an invigorating fugue...

...inclined to turn pathology into poetry. But he is certainly interested in how others did it. His collection of essays, subtitled Medical Analyses of Literary Men's Afflictions, balances biographical and clinical evidence with psychological speculation and common sense. "We do not test the consecrated wine for hemoglobin content, nor would Careme's recipe for a madeleine give us insight into the workings of Proust's imagination " he writes. "But literature is often a transformation of experience, and it can be illuminating to find out just what the expeirence was and how the writer used...

...from The White Peacock and allusions in Lady Chatterley's Lover that Mellors did not limit himself to ordinary heterosexual acts with Lady C. The difficulty with such speculation is that the term latent covers a long and slippery gradient. One might just as casually assume latent homosexual content in the movie Coming Home, that contemporary switch on Lady Chatterley in which the guy in the wheelchair gets the girl...
