...shock after reading Lev Grossman's "Girl Meets Game" [Feb. 11]. At a time when we are worried about teenagers on MySpace, Grossman talks about how great it is that his 3 1/2-year-old daughter can entertain herself on the Internet. Sure, the sites he mentioned are innocent, but inappropriate content is just a click away. Grossman would have served readers better if he had mentioned Internet search filters. Better yet, he could have stressed that the best way to entertain a young mind is by reading books. Jody Weissler, CEO, Childrensbookradio.com, Woodland Hills, California...
...this point, it's not news to anyone that staying active can benefit the heart, the waistline, even the mind. Still, there's a real disconnect between what we know and what we do. More than 60% of American adults do not exercise regularly, and many are content to admit they don't exercise at all. The play explores the unwillingness of characters to open themselves up and become vulnerable, but by the end, everyone is still more shut than is expected.Still, Beane’s play ultimately accomplishes a great deal: four memorable, often riotously funny characters...
...same intellectual plane distorts the proper order of education.Traditionally the purpose of university is to maintain and pass on intact to rising generations the vast treasury of knowledge that our civilization has acquired over the centuries. That we have a canon and classics—although their content may be disputed—testifies to the existence, if often overlooked, of this traditional purpose. English majors read Shakespeare and not Rowling for a reason: if final curricular decisions descended to students, we should not be surprised to see radical mayhem ensue. And then even the prestige of the Harvard name...
