...part of a $30 million upgrade undertaken after Florida's 2000 presidential recount debacle. Because of the voting fiasco, it took all of last week for state officials to confirm that Tampa attorney Bill McBride had narrowly, and stunningly, upset former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno in the Democratic contest to face Governor Jeb Bush. The two counties have until this week to revise their results, but a different outcome is unlikely...

...South has been averted, and a Miss America pageant once divided is now strong. After weeks in which two women claimed to be Miss North Carolina, MISTY CLYMER, right, has been named the sole bearer of the title. Clymer had been battling REBEKAH REVELS, who won the state contest but resigned--she says under pressure--when her ex-boyfriend alleged he had topless pictures of her. Sichrovsky remorsefully adds, "We failed to get the party out of the extremist corner." Though the party will contest the elections without Haider, support last week fell to 12%, down from a high of 27% almost three years ago. What happened? The party may have been a victim of its own success. Six months after it sprang to prominence in 1999, Haider relinquished the leadership because of the uproar...
