Although a fetus may look different from a human adult, so do newborn infants, toddlers, adolescents and the elderly. Human growth and development occur along a continuum, not in fully distinct and separate stages. Because there is no significant developmental change in the fetus from one day to the next, any point chosen for the termination of its life is necessarily arbitrary. Such scientific facts indicate that a fetus is entitled to the same Constitutional protection afforded to a newborn infant, from whom the fetus is separated in age by less than nine months of development...
This is not to say that government has turned its back on the problem. The Clinton Administration has spent $5 million on the homeless over the past six years--triple what was spent from 1987 to 1993. Most of the funding has gone into "continuum of care" programs that provide temporary housing and a range of services, from mental-illness treatment to job training. The approach has had some success in getting the chronically homeless on their feet, but it unsettles some advocates, who believe that the key to ending homelessness is still to boost the supply of affordable housing...
...getting a bigger hand during the State of the Union than the "U.S.A." savings idea did or that 1955 Dave Garroway 10-lb. microphone Senator Byrd likes to wear. After 228 consecutive shows that were wholly or mostly Monica, last year feels like a rip in the space-time continuum, a historical skid as inexplicable as the election of 1876 or the hairstyle you wore...
...consuming interests in physics and astronomy had led him to the work of Miguel Alcubierre, who suggested in a 1994 paper that the space-time continuum could be modified within the framework of Einstein's theory of general relativity to allow a spaceship to travel faster than light--much like the "warp drives" of science fiction. Serious physicists don't dismiss such theories out of hand, describing them as intriguing thought experiments that could conceivably be proved true in, oh, say, 300 or 400 years...
...revision of the timeworn cliché, "I saw my life passing before my eyes." The central thread at work is Ann's extended flashback of the summer weekend in which she met Harris Arden, a weekend which draws itself out over the entire novel in a lush, lingering continuum of heightened sensations, the country setting of water and trees providing the perfect isolated arena for Ann's realizations about life to flower. For the first time, she realizes that "falling in love" can mean talking control of one's own life. In Ann's words, "Every defense she'd ever...
