...some wearing ROSS FOR BOSS T shirts, cheered the diminutive man who they believe can clean up the mess in Washington. "Change means starting over, not just remodeling the house," declared Austin housewife Alida Anton. Many Americans agree with her that it may be time to hire a new contractor: a TIME/cnn poll showed Perot at 33%, Bush at 28% and Clinton at 24%. (See cover stories beginning on page...

...during a five-year period in the 1980s, McDade accepted money, air travel, use of vacation houses, even a golf umbrella from five manufacturers in exchange for help in obtaining defense contracts. Among the companies seeking favors were Sperry (now Unisys), Grumman and United Chem-Con, a now defunct contractor based in Lancaster, Penn. McDade -- who ran unopposed for his party's renomination two weeks ago and won the Democratic nomination as well on a write-in vote -- denied the charges, saying the investigation had turned his life into "a living nightmare...

A psychiatrist (Richard Gere, with his famous hair and casual sexual authority) blunders into toxic relationships with two wily sisters (Kim Basinger and Uma Thurman). American buyers aren't so merciful. At the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show last week, Rene Pacheco, a contractor who owns three Toyota pickups because he believes their American counterparts aren't as reliable, dismissed Detroit's latest offerings. "Take this car here," he said, pointing to a moderately expensive U.S. model. "Look at the paint job. Americans are into details. If you're going to spend $25,000, I don't want something that looks like this. The Japanese have a better product." Similar reasoning led the Los Angeles transportation commission to authorize the purchase of 41 light railcars...
