Most distinctive feature of the Chicago Civic Opera's past season was the increased excellence of its German performances. Reasons: Conductor Egon Pollak, Soprano Frida Leider, Contralto Maria Olszewska, Tenor Theodore Strack, Basso Alexander Kipnis. Last week President Samuel Insull returned from Europe, announced that there would be still greater improvement next year. Wagner's Meistersinger and Smetana's Bartered Bride will be added to the repertoire. Four famed European artists have been engaged?Soprano Lotte Lehmann of the Vienna Staatsoper, Soprano Maria Rajdl (Dresden), Baritones Rudolf Bockelmann (Hamburg) and Eduard Habich (Berlin). A fifth newcomer will be Contralto Sonia...
...program this year consisted of ten of the 267 chorale-cantatas written by Bach during his Leipzig cantorship (an average of one a month). And, as always, the great Mass in B Minor. Soloists for the cantatas and the Mass were Sopranos Ernestine Hohn-Eberhard and Esther Dale, Contralto Mabel Beddoe, Tenors Arthur Kraft and Arthur Hackett, Bassos Charles T. Tittman and Robert M. Crawford and Organist T. Edgar Shields. The local choir of 241 voices sang the choruses assisted by 40 members of the Philadelphia Orchestra...

Better characterizations were those of Contralto Marion Telva as the ill-tempered mother; of Basso Leon Rothier as the father so dumbly doting that he drove Louise back to Julien and the free-and-easy Paris. The audience appeared to appreciate most Max Bloch who as an old-clothesman stalked on the stage and off wearing...
Last week, after 19 years of distinguished service, Contralto Margarete Matzenauer let it be known that she was through at Manhattan's Metropolitan Opera House. Wanting no floral wreaths, no testimonial speeches, she saved her farewell announcement until after her last performance, gave then as a cause the fact that in recent years she had been allotted only secondary roles. Unlike Sopranos Frances Alda and Amelita Galli-Curci who have also retired this season from the Metropolitan (TIME, Nov. 25, Jan. 27), Contralto Matzenauer made no valedictory statement on the decadence of opera. Instead she referred...
...Most contralto roles are secondary. Contralto Matzenauer was perturbed because the Metropolitan management would not revive for her Samson et Dalila and Le Prophète, two of the few operas with contralto leads...
