...most convincing characterization was Jeanine Crader's Phedre, really the only role of any dimension. Though a small-voiced mezzo, she turned on her contralto chest tones when the occasion demanded, bravely sacrificing tonal purity for dramatic effect. The Thesee of baritone George Fouree was excessively forced, with no top notes; probably he was preoccupied with flailing the devils sailing over his head. Boris Carmeli (Pluton), Carol Bogard (Diana) and Norman Kelly (Tsiphone) were all effective in their smaller parts...

The object of these strong sentiments is the Chicago Tribune's deceptively frail Claudia Cassidy, whose barbed pen has made her the most widely read and feared critic of the lively arts in the Midwest. She has written finish to many a career in Chicago, notably those of two local conductors who left after continual Cassidy pannings...

...were all relaxed, and I wondered how it would come out." After eleven months' convalescence following a heart attack, Mahalia was still a little weak and scaled down from her old 250 Ibs. to a relatively gaunt 160 Ibs. She needn't have wondered about her rich contralto: it came out just fine. To save her the wear of traveling to studios on the East or West coasts, Columbia Records hauled some special tape equipment to Chicago. And there last week in the choir loft of the South Side's Greater Salem Baptist Church, where she began...
