Economic Effects. In sharp contrast to the disorders that brought the country to the brink of civil war, France was relatively 'quiet on election eve. Nearly all the 8,000,000 strikers were back at work, and the Sorbonne was calm again after Paris police dislodged the occupying young revolutionaries.
