...vibrant social and educational communities within the larger university. You see it in the spirit of the Elis at The Game, where inter-college rivalry nearly surpasses their animosity towards Fair Harvard. Yale has a popular residential college seminar program in which undergraduates propose the courses and instructors; contrast that with the poorly-publicized smattering of House seminar offerings at Harvard. Intramural athletics in Yale's colleges, instead of a hodgepodge of last-minute sign-ups and forfeits, is so intense and competitive that IM results are covered in campus publications...
...contrast, the French Club's modern French rap performance at this year's show was particularly refreshing. One club member began the performance by coming on stage wearing a beret and carrying a loaf of bread. He immediately dashed both to the ground, grabbing instead a microphone and starting to rap. It's not the type of music that you walk down the Champs-Elysees listening to, which should be evident from the subtitle of the piece, "pictures from Pagan Russia...
When these performers get to play out, people listen, if not for genuine interest then at least for the excitement of the rare opportunity. The dearth of such groups is so stark that any musical contrast, whether derivative punk or boundary-pushing synth noise, bestows a welcome color to the campus landscape. At Harvard, to be a musical pioneer doesn't require a genre-defining newness, just the will and perseverance to write an original song...
