...What a contrast to my next patient. Sean is half Bob's age. He weighs less, isn't as active, and has nice straight legs. Barely a trace of arthritis on X-ray and nothing except "minimal arthritic changes" on his MRI. He has taken Advil, Naprosyn, Voltaren, Celebrex with minimal help. Injections into his knees of hyaluronic acid (a component of joint fluid) and corticosteroids provided only a few weeks of relief. Physical therapy, braces, acupuncture, yoga all failed. He couldn't get out of chairs, couldn't climb stairs because of the pain. There was one thing left...

...take the company private. Yet the stock, trading at around $8.50 a share, still indicates that Wall Street takes a dim view of Ford's prospects; the company's market capitalization is just $16 billion, well below the cash value of the firm. (Toyota's market cap, by contrast, is $174 billion.) Ford's debt was cut below investment grade by the major credit-ratings agencies last year. ...Orion spacecraft, by contrast, is based on proven Apollo technology. It?s configured like a large Apollo: a conical crew compartment atop a cylindrical engine module. It will sit atop heavy-lift boosters that are modeled in part after the shuttle?s own liquid-fuel engines - far and away the best part of the old shuttle technology and the part most worth saving. Unlike Apollo, it will be stuffed with 21st century electronics and computers, and it will be cleverly reconfigurable, able to carry six astronauts into Earth orbit and four to the moon or Mars...

...read Ghosh's account of his trip to Baghdad on the Highway of Death from the safety of a train headed from Los Angeles to San Diego. There could be no more striking contrast between the scenic sunset I saw over the Pacific Ocean and his views of rubble from roadside bombs. I heard the roar of the surf and the sounds of children laughing as they ran toward the sea. He heard the "deep rumble" of M-16s and the "higher-pitched clatter" of AK-47s. Michelle Pietzak Los Angeles...

...comparisons are odious, of course. The rioting French Muslims were largely poor, unemployed immigrants or the children of immigrants, familiar with anti-Arab stigma and no doubt aware that the number of fellow-believers in the French Assembly could be counted on one hand - with fingers left over. By contrast, the American Christians who responded "Christian first" are probably employed and ethnically unalienated (to put it politely). Far from being disenfranchised, they are an increasingly powerful voting bloc who - when they wanted to see their views better represented - elected and then re-elected a President...
