...Decibel Gap. By contrast with Maverick Shapp, Yale-trained Attorney Shafer is a dutiful, if undistinguished, party pro; he served two terms as a state senator before running with William Scranton-who cannot succeed himself-in 1962. While Shapp is a wispy, almost Chaplinesque figure, Shafer, son of a Protestant minister, is a craggy-faced, sandy-haired, 6-ft. 2-in. ex-athlete who won nine letters at Allegheny College to go with his Phi Beta Kappa key. Lawyer Shafer is as taciturn as Tycoon Shapp is talkative. Shafer "comes on like Mount Rushmore," as one Pennsylvanian puts...
...stark contrast is the Tondo slum on Manila's northern waterfront ? a maze of alleys, mud-floored huts, hovels built from packing cases. Some 8,000 pushcarts roll through Tondo in search of trash and scrap paper, the collection of which is the district's principal occupation. It was this effort which has provoked this year's poll and a commitment from Dean Ford that the Faculty will reexamine the College's policy...
Alain Resnais's "La Guerre Est Finie" is a sombre and intellectual story of left-wing Spanish revolutionaries centered in Paris. Resnais has abandoned the strongly contrasting black-and-white tones of "Hiroshima Mon Amour" and "Last Year At Marienbad" in favor of low-contrast greys which deliberately reduce the effect of the plot's melodramatic content. Although the visual construction is simpler than that of "Marienbad" and "Muriel," Resnais does insert short scenes which represent the imagination of the hero, a tired revolutionary played brilliantly by Yves Montand...
