...Anderson proved easy to fall out of love with as well, as his subsequent movies became bogged down by a tendency to revisit the same themes - broken families in need of healing - and control issues that were outsize even for a filmmaker. With The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou there was the sense of being sucked into a rabbit hole dug by Anderson, and by the cloying The Darjeeling Limited, his self-indulgence had swollen to the point where the hole was too claustrophobic for any but his most devoted fans to bear...

...Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released on Thursday updated estimates of the number of H1N1 infections and deaths in the U.S. According to the new figures, about 4,000 Americans, including 540 children, have died of H1N1 flu, and 22 million people have been infected since April, when the novel flu virus first surfaced. The new death toll, which encompasses data through Oct. 17, represents a tripling of CDC estimates issued just last week; the number of deaths in children was quadruple last week's figures. ...anything, the best lesson to date that can be drawn from the show is the one manifested in the remarkable pluck and ingenuity of the Draper himself. Faced with the decision to continue on blindly, and unhappily, as a piece in a nebulous mechanism he has no control over, our man refuses to resign himself to the station of a corporate whore (as his mother was, and as he views his soon-to-be ex-wife Betty to be). I, and certainly many fans, expected this finale to be a doomsday episode–the death of a character seemed...

Against Columbia, it looked like the title chance was about to slip through the team’s fingertips with Harvard down a goal late in the second half. But freshman forward Brian Rogers brought the Crimson back and sent the game into an extra period with a goal in the 79th minute. In overtime, the momentum stayed on Harvard’s side, and with fewer than five minutes into the period...

...According to the report, the black jails are generally used to detain people who travel to Beijing and other cities to petition the government for redress of injustices faced in the countryside. The control of court systems by local officials means that they can't find justice at home. They often come to bigger cities with stories of official corruption, illegal land seizures or workplace inequities. The petition system, a remnant of the Qing Dynasty-era letters-and-visits system, is wildly ineffective, with just 3 out of 2,000 cases resolved, according to one study. Still, for poor Chinese...
