...breaks through onto a rolling plateau of sagebrush, juniper and pine. It is here, on this remote plateau, southwest of Rifle, Colo., that Caterpillars of the Colony Development Operation have already cut 300 yds. into a mountain of shale. Near by, in another canyon, Union Oil engineers monitor a conveyor belt delivering a stream of shale into a giant funnel. Some 40 miles south, at Logan's Wash, Occidental Petroleum miners have cut two mine faces into the sides of a shale mountain. Farther northwest lies another tract of shale land soon to be developed by Gulf...

...forest, forbidding, primeval, untamed. Then, on a remote bend of the Jari River, a fast-flowing tributary, the vista changes dramatically. There, as tall as a 16-story building, stands a monument to modern engineering: a brand-new, spanking-white pulp plant, which reaches out with ducts, cables and conveyor belts to a wood-chipping mill, a chemical factory and a power generating facility...

...many to the box?" she asked over the roar of the machinery. "Forty-eight," was the answer. "Can I do it?" she asked at once, and promptly sat down to pack two boxes. She lamely tried to stuff chocolates into trays that glided slowly past her on a conveyor belt, but found the job difficult. "It takes concentration, doesn't it?" she said with a frown. In a tea factory, she gamely swallowed a bitter brew rather than spit it out into a handy spittoon. "Of course I'm not going to spit it out," she joked...

...from Annapolis to Baltimore/Washington International Airport left the lights playing Frisbee and riding the baggage claim conveyor belts while waiting for news on the ill-fated flight to Boston. After that plane had been cancelled, the oarsmen motored to National Airport in Washington, D.C. for a quick plane ride to Hartford, Conn. The team then bused into Cambridge via a dinner stop in Springfield--at the wonderful hour of 1 a.m. . . . ten-and-a-half hours after departure...

...technology does not always keep pace with ambition. Monsanto, after successfully experimenting with a small-scale advanced system that burned solid waste with very little oxygen to produce synthetic oil or gas, set up a recovery plant in Baltimore. Under the larger-scale operating conditions, snarls developed in the conveyor belt that fed trash into the kiln. That, among other technical problems, led Monsanto to give up, but the city of Baltimore continues to work on the plant, hoping to make it succeed. The cost of building garbage-processing plants is high too; Raytheon is spending $50 million...
