Watergate Conspirator Liddy, who had participated in the raid as an assistant district attorney, is not the first convict to try writing his way to rehabilitation - or at least to use writing as a means of passing prison time constructively. As a participant in a weekly workshop at the federal prison on Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, Liddy is not even unique in his fame. Still there is little doubt that continuing news stories about Watergate developments could have an impact on the trials. A recent Columbia University study, for instance, found that a mock panel of jurors exposed to prejudicial news stories was far more likely to convict than were jurors who had read only carefully neutral articles. Social Psychologist Alice Padawer-Singer, a co-director of the study, concluded that thorough questioning of potential jurors is critical to obtaining an impartial trial. What can now be done by the people of the U.S. to clear up this intolerable mess? First the massive campaign to impeach and convict Nixon of high crimes and misdemeanors must be increased until he is forced to resign or driven from public office.
